Conexus nurse, Kristel's guest blog.

As an international nurse seeking a career in the United States, it is important to consider that nursing in the U.S. may differ significantly from how it is practiced in your home country. In addition to ongoing training and education through Conexus Academy to help you transition smoothly into your new nursing role in the U.S., Kristel shares her essential items and recommendations for a successful shift as a new nurse in America.

Invest in the right shoes

Regardless of how long your shift is, having the right shoes is crucial. As a nurse, you will spend a lot of time on your feet, so comfortable and supportive footwear can make all the difference. It is best to visit a store and try on shoes in person to ensure comfort and fit, but there are also options online which are often more affordable with discounts and deals. Here are my budget-friendly recommendations:

Secure your scrubs

Figs is a popular brand among nurses, although it can be a bit pricey. Don’t feel obligated to buy expensive scrubs—there are plenty of affordable options that work just as well and align with your financial goals. When shopping for scrubs, I consider a few key factors:

  • Texture and comfort – your scrubs should be comfortable and stretchy enough to allow free movement during your shifts. Thankfully, many brands now offer scrubs with a butter-soft texture that feels amazing to wear.
  • Pockets – pockets are a lifesaver for nurses! They’re essential for storing pens, stethoscopes, scissors, work phones, and other tools you need on hand throughout the day.
  • Color requirements – different departments may have specific color requirements for scrubs. Always confirm the color code for your unit before making a purchase to ensure compliance.
  • Jackets – hospital hallways can get quite chilly, so don’t forget to invest in a good jacket that pairs well with your scrubs. It’s an extra layer that will keep you comfortable during long shifts.

Get a trusty backpack

Most workplaces provide lockers, so you may not need to carry a backpack all the time. However, I have found that having a backpack is incredibly useful for storing essentials like a lunch bag, water bottle, a change of clothes, and hand cream. It is also convenient if you plan to hit the gym after work. Any backpack will do, as long as it’s spacious enough to hold your essentials.

Take care of your hands

As a nurse, you are always washing your hands and using sanitizer which can dry out your skin. I recommend carrying a hand cream either on your person or in your backpack. Trust me – investing in a good quality hand cream is worth it, helping to repair your skin’s protective barrier and keeping your skin hydrated, healthy, and ready to handle whatever your shift throws at you.

Stethoscope and scissors

A budget-friendly and reliable stethoscope will work perfectly for most general nursing needs. Unless specifically required for your specialty, you don’t need to invest in expensive equipment. Additionally, scissors are a must-have! You will be thankful to have them when dealing with stubborn IV bags or cutting through medical tape that requires Hulk-like strength.

Night shift essential

A clip-on flashlight is crucial for night shift nurses so that you can perform checks on patients without turning on the bright lights and disturbing their sleep.

Carry a clipboard

When receiving a report from the previous shift or making your patient notes, it’s handy to have a good clipboard. I like that I can also store my pens, pencils, and extra paper during my shift.

Stay hydrated

It is crucial to drink lots of water during your shifts and stay hydrated. Having a water bottle on hand serves as a great reminder to drink the right amount of water throughout the day or night. When choosing a water bottle, I like to opt for one with a hygienic design – one that doesn’t require you to touch the mouthpiece with your hands, for example.

Don’t forget your lunch

Having a lunch bag is a must-have for any shift. Not only does it ensure you have the fuel you need to power through a busy day, but it’s also a practical way to curb impulsive cafeteria runs or takeout orders. Packing your own meals helps you stay on track with your goals—whether that’s eating healthier, saving money, or both.

Music to your ears

Last but not least, a good pair of earbuds goes a long way! Walking into work with the right soundtrack in your ears can set the tone for your entire shift. Whether it’s an energizing playlist, an inspiring podcast, or even a lecture to keep learning on the go, what you listen to has a big influence on your mood and mindset. So, if you’re looking for that extra boost or a moment of calm before the chaos, don’t leave home without your earbuds!
