Supporting International Laboratory Professionals through Clinical Education

Tags: Why Conexus

Transitioning into a U.S. laboratory as an internationally trained medical technologist is a significant step. While clinical expertise is already well established, every healthcare system operates differently with its own standards, workflows, and regulatory requirements. Adapting to a new environment takes time, preparation, and the right support.

At Conexus MedStaff, our clinical development program is designed to make that transition as smooth and structured as possible, helping laboratory professionals build confidence while ensuring they’re fully prepared to meet expectations from day one.

What our program covers

Before any placement begins, laboratory professionals work through a structured education program oriented around the specifics of U.S. laboratory practice. Rather than revisiting foundational clinical knowledge, the program focuses on the areas where international training and U.S. standards most commonly differ.

Our Clinical Development Team provides a comprehensive education plan designed to upskill professionals across all areas of the lab in preparation for client interviews. Ongoing learning continues through a monthly continuing education program available throughout each lab professional's time with Conexus.

Continued support through placement

Support doesn’t stop at deployment. Once placement begins, our laboratory professionals continue to have access to clinical guidance as they adjust to the day-to-day realities of working in a U.S. laboratory setting.

Throughout the orientation phase, the Clinical Development Team meets regularly with newly deployed lab professionals to identify any areas where additional or targeted training may be helpful. Resources include self-paced learning materials, continuing education modules, and opportunities for one-on-one coaching.

Once orientation is complete and the normal shift routine is established, the Clinical Development Team follows up quarterly to discuss progress, certification status, continuing education requirements, and longer-term career goals, including further education and certification plans.

Meet The Team: Educator Spotlight

Leah

Leah Gautreaux, Clinical Development Specialist

Leah brings experience across both clinical laboratory science and education, a combination that shapes how she supports internationally trained lab professionals. She understands the technical demands of the role and has the teaching background to help clinicians build confidence in an unfamiliar system.

Her approach is thorough, practical, and supportive, grounded in the understanding that adapting to a new clinical environment goes beyond knowledge transfer.

“I believe that access to education is one of the finest gifts we have here in the U.S. That's why I feel that being able to share my experiences as a former clinical laboratory scientist and lab educator with others is extremely rewarding. Being able to share this knowledge while assisting others to follow their dreams of working as laboratorians in the U.S. through Conexus is indescribably humbling and arguably the most fulfilling educator role I have ever had the pleasure of serving in.”

Outside of her role at Conexus, Leah has spent nearly two decades volunteering as a judge at her local school district’s Science and Engineering Fair. In this role, she works closely with students to help them develop stronger, more competitive projects, often encouraging them to pursue careers in science and engineering.

“Science fair is one of the best ways to show students how to take a subject they love and turn it into an experience they can be proud of.”

It’s that same drive to support the next generation that shapes her work at Conexus, where she plays a key role in preparing lab professionals for long-term success in the field.

Our clinical education program prepares and supports laboratory professionals so they can succeed from the start.
