Building a New Life Through Nursing: Abiba's Story

Abiba, a registered nurse from Ghana, spent nearly ten years caring for patients in medical-surgical and outpatient units before her move to the U.S.

"I gained experience caring for patients with a wide range of conditions, and learned how important teamwork and compassion are," she says. "Working in a resource-limited environment taught me how to stay calm under pressure and think critically in fast-paced situations."

Her decision to pursue nursing in the U.S. was rooted in both professional goals and personal purpose.

"I wanted to grow professionally and challenge myself in a healthcare system known for advanced technology, evidence-based practice, and strong opportunities for career development," Abiba says. "I also wanted to reunite with my children, and that hope motivated me to pursue nursing in the U.S."

The process that followed required resilience and support, as Abiba completed licensing exams, documentation, and immigration steps while balancing work and family.

"The journey was an emotional one for me. I was anxious at times, and the thought of not being able to achieve my goal was the fuel that pushed me to work hard to ensure my dream materialized," she says. "Throughout the process, I appreciated the support Conexus offered me, especially when navigating unfamiliar requirements. When I finally arrived in the U.S., it was a dream come true. It felt rewarding to see all the hard work and patience pay off."

Adjusting to a new healthcare system brought its own learning curve and in the process, Abiba rebuilt her confidence and sense of purpose in a new cultural and clinical environment.

"The technology, the policies, and the care protocols were all different from what I was used to," Abiba says. "The first few months were more challenging than I expected, but also very rewarding, and I was encouraged by how supportive my coworkers and mentors were."

Today, Abiba is thriving in her new role in a behavioral health unit.

"My role involves providing direct patient care, administering medications and treatments, monitoring patient progress, and providing therapies and support for patients struggling with their mental health," she says. "I also collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary team. Every day is different, and I enjoy my work knowing that I'm able to give the support and exceptional care my patients need."

That commitment to compassionate, consistent care recently earned her recognition from her facility, along with a nomination for a Conexus DAISY Award.

"This recognition means a lot to me because it reflects the hard work, dedication, and passion I bring to patient care every day," she says. "It also serves as motivation to do more for my patients. Being acknowledged by my facility is both humbling and motivating."

Reflecting on a recent Conexus event celebrating nurses like her, Abiba shared: "I truly appreciated the opportunity to meet and connect with fellow healthcare professionals. Events like this help make a new place feel a little more like home."
