Scholar Spotlight: John Rey

By Conexus MedStaff - Posted Jan 2, 2026

The Conexus Community Scholarship was created to support aspiring nurses in the Philippines by providing financial assistance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. Through the program, students gain guidance for the NCLEX, access to outreach programs, and the encouragement to pursue their career goals in healthcare. This special feature introduces John, one of our Conexus Community scholars and explores how the scholarship is supporting him as he works toward his nursing goals and a future in healthcare.

Meet John

A nursing graduate from Far Eastern University (FEU), John’s interest in nursing began at a young age. He learned to measure blood pressure and check blood glucose while helping care for his mother’s health conditions. These early experiences gave him practical skills and a strong foundation in patient care that continue to guide his professional development.

“Those quiet moments with my Mama planted a seed in me. There was no grand moment of realization, just steady, growing certainty—this is what I’m meant to do.”

As the youngest in his family, John is the first to attend college and graduate, demonstrating his determination and resilience. Nursing school presented challenges, including academic and financial pressures. The Conexus scholarship has provided crucial support, allowing him to focus on his studies, access mentorship, and engage in professional development opportunities without the burden of financial stress.

During his time at FEU, John took on leadership roles in clinical rotations, gaining experience in hospital and community settings. He also participated in outreach programs promoting health and nutrition, developing both clinical and communication skills that will serve him in his future nursing career.

“Receiving the Conexus scholarship reminded me that I am not alone in this journey. It allowed me to concentrate on my education and licensure preparation, giving me both support and motivation to continue.”

John plans to begin his career in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and hopes to pursue a master’s degree in nursing. He also aims to mentor future nurses and contribute to strengthening healthcare in the Philippines, helping improve access and quality of care for patients and communities.

“To me, nursing isn‘t just a profession. It is an extension of who I am. And every step that I’ve taken, from that first BP reading at the age of nine to becoming a future RN, has brought me closer to the kind of nurse and person I dreamed of becoming.”

Conexus is proud to support John and other scholars as they prepare to enter the nursing profession with the skills, compassion, and dedication needed to make a meaningful impact locally and globally.
