Tips for Taking the Next Generation NCLEX Exam

By Conexus MedStaff - Posted Jun 7, 2023

The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) is a new exam that has been introduced by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) this year. This new exam is designed to better assess a nurse’s ability to think critically and make clinical judgments.

If you’re an international nurse or international nursing student preparing to take the NGN exam, here are some tips that can help you succeed:

  1. Start Preparing Early: The NGN exam is designed to test your ability to think critically and make clinical judgments. This means that you will need to have a strong understanding of nursing concepts and be able to apply them in a clinical setting. Start preparing for the exam early by reviewing your nursing textbooks and taking practice exams.
  2. Understand the Format of the Exam: The NGN exam is a computerized adaptive test (CAT). This means that the difficulty of the questions will be adjusted based on your responses. The exam will also include a variety of question formats, including multiple-choice, select-all-that-apply, and ordered-response questions. Familiarize yourself with the format of the exam so that you know what to expect on test day. Learn more about the format of the new exam: click here for access to our free webinar.
  3. Focus on Critical Thinking: The NGN exam is designed to test your ability to think critically and make clinical judgments. As you prepare for the exam, focus on developing your critical thinking skills. Practice analyzing patient scenarios and identifying the most appropriate nursing interventions.
  4. Practice Time Management: The NGN exam is a timed exam, and you will have a limited amount of time to answer each question. Practice time management skills by taking practice exams and timing yourself. This will help you get a feel for how much time you have to answer each question.
  5. Take Care of Yourself: Taking the NGN exam can be stressful, so it’s important to take care of yourself during the preparation process. Get plenty of rest, eat a healthy diet, and exercise regularly. Taking care of yourself will help you stay focused and alert during the exam.
  6. Seek Help if Needed: If you are struggling to prepare for the NGN exam, don’t be afraid to seek help. Talk to your nursing instructors, academic advisors, or other healthcare professionals for guidance and support.
