From the Philippines to the USA: Nurse Ruth’s Journey So Far
By Conexus MedStaff - Posted May 12, 2025
This Nurses Week, we’re celebrating international nurses making a difference across America, including Ruth, a nurse from the Philippines. Since starting a new life and career in America, Ruth has overcome many challenges. When we first shared her story, she had just marked one year in the U.S. Now, just months later, she’s celebrating another milestone: reaching the halfway point in her Conexus contract.
Ruth’s journey at a glance

Ruth’s journey began in 2011, when she graduated with her nursing degree.
Now, she’s living her American dream.
Reflecting on success
For Ruth, this milestone provides a moment of reflection:
“I’ve been here in the U.S. for a year and a half now. A lot has changed. A lot of challenges have been thrown my way. But I became more knowledgeable, more confident, and more excited. I migrated to the U.S. directly from the Philippines. I hadn’t worked in any other country before this. I started out a scared nurse, even with my experience back home. Everything was different.”
Each hour on the job has given Ruth the opportunity to build her skills, her voice, and her community. Reflecting on completing 2,500 hours, Ruth describes the moment as ‘a glass half-full.’ “I have gained a lot of friends, and my support system became sturdy. Every second of those 2,500 hours was meaningful and rewarding.”
Making her mark
Ruth’s dedication is recognized by her patients, coworkers, and the Director of Nursing at her hospital. Her commitment to her job as a nurse is making a real impact on the lives of her patients and well-being of her community.
“One thing I will always cherish is my patient feedback. Recently, I am so ecstatic to have received appreciative notes from my patients and coworkers. I always try my best to deliver outstanding care to my patients, not just technically but holistically, and receiving their praise gives me the drive to do more for them.”
The journey continues
Looking ahead, Ruth is confident about her future and what the next half of her contract will bring her.
“I am now more confident in interacting with my patients. I am excited to move forward and achieve excellence and success with the people supporting me like my family, friends and Conexus team.”
Ruth’s story reminds us that while the journey may take time, every step forward matters. Her advice to other international nurses is simple:
“Always look on the brighter side and think positive. You might feel tied up with your agency, but I assure you that those hours will be the most comfortable, helpful, and valuable of your career. Enjoy the journey and love every bit of it.”
For Ruth, nursing is more than a job. It’s a calling rooted in deep care, family values, and the joy of being able to uplift others at their most vulnerable.
“Nursing will always be a passion for me because it allows me to make a meaningful difference to others. I am so blessed to impact people’s lives. Filipino nurses are the best breed of nurses because of the passion burning within us to provide high-quality care. Wherever you choose to serve people, always aspire to inspire.”
Congratulations, Ruth! We’re honored to be on this journey with you.
