Strengthening Maternal and Community Health with Nyaya Health Nepal

By Conexus MedStaff - Posted Mar 16, 2026

Through our partnership with Nyaya Health Nepal, we are proud to support programs that strengthen community healthcare. In rural Nepal, community health volunteers are often the first point of contact for families seeking health advice. They play a critical role in supporting mothers, children, and households, bridging gaps between healthcare systems and the communities they serve.

With support from Conexus MedStaff funding, their latest program, Healthy Minds, Healthy Mothers: Empowering Frontline Health Workers in Mental Health Capacity, helped community health workers build skills in maternal wellbeing, mental health, and disease prevention.

The program brought together 24 community health workers and six local teachers in Madi Rural Municipality, Kaski District, to strengthen knowledge in mental health, nutrition, and preventing non-communicable diseases. By training both healthcare volunteers and educators, the program helped them share practical health guidance with mothers, children, and families, while encouraging collaboration across schools and communities to ensure maternal and family health knowledge was shared and sustained.

Nau Maya Gurung

One participant, Nau Maya Gurung, 55, has served as a Community Health Volunteer in Sikles for over 30 years, supporting around 40 households. Her earlier training focused on immunizations, vitamin supplementation, and maternal-child health programs. In recent years, she noticed new challenges emerging, including growing mental health concerns and changing dietary habits. The recent training helped her address these issues directly. She now feels better equipped to counsel families, identify risks early, and guide mothers and children to timely care.

The program is expected to benefit nearly 1,900 residents, including 152 children under five and 38 expectant mothers, building a stronger support system for families. Across Nepal, Community Health Volunteers play a vital role in promoting healthier communities. Their work supports mothers through pregnancy, helps families access care, and ensures vital health information reaches even the most remote areas.

Programs like Healthy Minds, Healthy Mothers strengthen the capacity of these frontline women, ensuring they have the training and tools to respond to evolving community health challenges. When we invest in women on the frontlines, we strengthen maternal health and build healthier communities for generations to come.
