Scholar Spotlight: Algen Jan

By Conexus MedStaff - Posted Feb 2, 2026

As part of our Conexus Community Scholarship program, we’re excited to feature Algen, a nursing graduate from Far Eastern University, Manila. From a young age, Algen spent significant time in hospitals due to various health conditions, giving him a first-hand perspective on the role of nurses and inspiring him to pursue a career in healthcare. For him, nursing is not just about providing care, it’s about being a voice for patients and communities that are often underserved.

Algen has excelled academically throughout his journey. He completed high school at the Regional Science High School in Zambales with High Honors, and his National Career Assessment Exam placed him on the path toward healthcare. Nursing school was demanding, requiring sleepless nights, hands-on clinical practice, and exposure to the full spectrum of patient care — from vital sign monitoring, feeding, and charting, to bed baths and even post-mortem care. Through these challenges, he built both resilience and practical expertise that now define his approach to nursing.

“Nursing is more than a profession; it’s a calling. Seeing people feel seen and supported motivates me to continue pursuing this path rooted in service, compassion, and advocacy.”

During college, Algen also engaged in community projects through youth organizations. He led initiatives such as first aid and CPR training sessions, donation drives, and disaster relief for communities affected by typhoons, learning the impact of even small acts of care and advocacy. These experiences reinforced his commitment to public health and serving marginalized populations.

Algen has a clear vision for his future: he wants to work in high-pressure healthcare settings, such as emergency rooms, where he finds the intensity both motivating and rewarding. He is also inspired by first responder roles and hopes to combine his clinical skills with opportunities to respond in critical, fast-paced situations.

“For me, nursing is not just about healing a person, it is about being a beacon of hope and being present in the most critical moments of someone’s life. My journey, dreams, and aspirations all lead to one goal, and that is to become a nurse who serves with fortitude, excellence, and being upright. Being a nurse is not just a title, but a great responsibility.”

The Conexus Community Scholarship has played a key role in supporting Algen’s journey, providing financial assistance, mentorship, and guidance as he prepares for the next steps in his nursing career. Learn more about the scholarship here.
