Looking to make friends in your new community? Here’s some inspiration.

Creating a positive balance between work, personal and social life is important for healthy, happy living. Your social circle can play a big role in a well-rounded lifestyle. However, making new friends can be difficult as an adult – especially when you’re working, and even more so if you’ve recently moved to a new country.

Our team of fantastic Engagement Managers will introduce you to your local Conexus MedStaff community when you arrive in your new U.S. home. But if you want to break away to build connections of your own, here are some great hobbies that’ll help you make friends. You might even pick up some new skills, too!

Budget-friendly hobbies

  • Geocaching. This worldwide treasure hunt can be done solo or in groups. All you need is the free app to take part.
  • Book club. If you can’t find a book club in your local community, start one!
  • Games night. There are lots of gaming groups out there that specialize in all genres, from boardgames to video games.

Active hobbies

  • Running or cycling club. Get your cardio in while getting to know your local area better.
  • Be a team player. There are leagues out there for pretty much any sport. Find your favorite and sign up.
  • Rock climbing. This increasingly popular sport is becoming more available, even if you don’t live in a mountainous region.

Hobbies for couples

  • Dance class. Pick something like salsa or ballroom dancing – you’re guaranteed to impress at your next family gathering!
  • Cooking. Polish up your abilities as a pair, and meet new people while you do it.
  • Volunteering. Put your skills to use for a good cause. There are plenty of organizations looking for a helping hand.

Family-friendly hobbies

  • Learn a new language. Get the kids involved… they might even outshine you!
  • Community gardening. Find your local community garden and take part in caring for it as a family.
  • Join a hiking or walking group. You may need to invest in gear, but the walks themselves are free.

Creative hobbies

  • Join a choir or band. If you’re musically-inclined, find a local group that will appreciate your talents.
  • Theatre or improv groups. Let your inner star loose on the stage.
  • Creative writing or poetry. Find a group to write and share with.
